Are airlines responsible for lost items?

Airlines is responsible for the loss of checked baggage during its custody. However, the liability is subject to limitations. For instance, if valuable items such as important documents, securities, jewelry, antiques, fragile items, electronic devices, or prescription drugs are placed in checked baggage and are lost or damaged, the airline's liability is limited to that of common checked baggage.
